Raising Rabbits - A Neutered Rabbit Is A Happier Rabbit

Neutering and Spaying (Altered) Your House Rabbit.

An important thing you should consider when raising rabbits, is to have them neutered or spayed (altered). This is one of the best things you can do for your rabbit. When they are 10-12 weeks old, (adolescent age) they become moody and fidgety. They may start to become more aggressive.

They may start to nip you or another rabbit. Males (Bucks) will mark their territory by spraying their urine all over your house. I don’t think you want that.

If you have a female rabbit (Doe), you want to be sure you do not have unwanted litters. 85% of adult female rabbits die of reproductive cancer if not altered. Alter rabbits are calmer, happier and easier to train to use the litter box.

Female rabbits should be spayed when they are 5-6 months old. While the male rabbit should be neutered when they are 3-4 months old.

When you are raising rabbits and you have two or more rabbits, you definitely may want to make sure your rabbits were altered. If they were not, two bucks could become very aggressive with each other and with you. They can cause serious injury. Their teeth are very, very sharp.

I know this by first hand experience, Fu and I were at the vet’s office, he became frighten and he let me know by nipping my neck. OUCH! He never broke the skin, but blood did come to the surface. Fu knew what he was doing. He wanted my attention and he got it!

I have had all my animals altered. When I received my boys, one of the first things I did was make an appointment at the vet’s for them. My Petie and Oreo were truly best of buds, even though I received Oreo years after I received Petie. Since I had them neutered they got along great.

I even made sure when I moved into my house and received my two dogs to add to my family, I made sure they were also spayed.

Unless you are breeding your rabbit or any animal, I believe they should be altered. They are less aggressive and fussy. Everyone just gets along much better when they are altered.

So when you are raising rabbits please consider having them neutered or spayed. Sometimes, if you adopt a bunny rabbit from a Humane Society they may already be altered. So the price you pay is an excellent price for such a wonderful pet.

Raising rabbits is a responsibility and a good idea to consider is to have them altered.
